Dozens of teachers across the nation recently submitted stories about memorable classroom moments for an online contest and ResponsiveEd’s Stacy Watson’s was chosen as the favorite. The second-grade teacher at Tyler Classical Academy in Tyler, Texas received $500 toward a classroom makeover for her story involving a toy coming to life during reading time.

“I will never forget reading an old Hallmark interactive book called Watson and the Case of the Sneaky Stealer to my class,” Stacy recalls in her prize-winning entry. “The students love this book because Watson is my last name and he is a problem solver, just like they aspire to be (and frequently are). The stuffed raccoon that accompanies book wasn’t working, but the students wanted to hear the story anyway. So I let my ‘Gamer of the Week’ (like a student of the week) hold Watson the Raccoon while I read. When I finished, he bonked a little girl sitting next to him and the raccoon starting talking ‘Watson! Somebody call Watson!’ Everyone laughed and cheered. They were so excited and begged me to read the story again. Now, any time they are stuck on a problem, my students all say ‘Watson! Somebody call Watson!'”

Congratulations to Ms. Watson, who says she already has some ideas about how to enhance her classroom with the $500.

Did you know that layout and other physical attributes of the classroom can enhance learning? According to one study, nearly 75% of the variation in student performance is due to environmental factors such as lighting, classroom paint colors and the presence (or absence) of large flat work surfaces that support collaboration.

I just wanted to give a BIG thank you to ResponsiveEd for giving back to one of your teachers. Each year teachers spend hundreds of dollars of their personal income and countless hours to try and create a fun and welcoming learning environment for their students. For this particular teacher it is a very welcomed prize!
