See below for more information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding Ebola.
About Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed this week, through laboratory tests, the first case of Ebola to be diagnosed in the United States in a person who had traveled to Dallas, Texas, from Liberia. The patient did not have symptoms when leaving West Africa, but developed symptoms approximately four days after arriving in the United States on September 20.
“Ebola can be scary. But there’s all the difference in the world between the U.S. and parts of Africa where Ebola is spreading. The United States has a strong health care system and public health professionals who will make sure this case does not threaten our communities,” said CDC Director, Dr. Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “While it is not impossible that there could be additional cases associated with this patient in the coming weeks, I have no doubt that we will contain this.”
Symptoms of Ebola include:
Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola, but the average is 8 to 10 days.
Recovery from Ebola depends on the patient’s immune response. People who recover from Ebola infection develop antibodies that last for at least 10 years.
When an infection does occur in humans, the virus can be spread in several ways to others. Ebola is spread through direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with:
Healthcare providers caring for Ebola patients and the family and friends in close contact with Ebola patients are at the highest risk of getting sick, because they may come in contact with infected blood or body fluids of sick patients.
No specific vaccine or medicine (e.g., antiviral drug) has been proven to be effective against Ebola. Symptoms of Ebola are treated as they appear.
Good hygiene and good health practices always involve the following:
Responsive Education Solutions will continue to monitor the situation and will correspond with the staff, parents, and students as information is presented. Thank you for helping to keep the students at ResponsiveEd safe and healthy.

Lewisville, Texas – Haley Ragsdale, a student at Premier High School? of Lewisville, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Premier High School nominated Miss Ragsdale for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service. She volunteered for over 500 hours at New Hope Learning Center with children from six weeks to five years old.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.
“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”
“Demonstrating civic responsibility through volunteerism is an important part of life,” said NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. “These honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate.”
Prudential Spirit of Community Award applications were distributed nationwide last September through middle level and high schools, Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and Hands-On Network affiliates. These schools and officially designated local organizations nominated Local Honorees, whose applications were advanced for state-level judging. In addition, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards selected State Honorees, Distinguished Finalists, and Certificate of Excellence recipients. Volunteer activities were judged on criteria including personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact, and personal growth.]]>

Dr. Kathleen Arnn Named Headmaster of Founders Classical AcademySM of Leander
Arnn will head the new classical academy in Leander, TX.
LEANDER, TX — November 15, 2013 —Responsive Education Solutions® (ResponsiveEd®) announced today that Dr. Kathleen Arnn will become the founding Headmaster of Founders Classical Academy in Leander, Texas. Arnn is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Affairs at Morehead State University.
Arnn has a passion for classical education, as her schooling and career shows. She has taught courses in political philosophy and American political thought, and presented several academic papers, including “Justice in Aristotle’s Politics and Nicomachean Ethics” and “Cicero and Augustine on Faith, Reason, and the Best Life.”
Founders Classical Academies are the first classical charter schools in Texas created as a result of collaboration between Hillsdale College’s Barney Charter School Initiative and ResponsiveEd. Through this initiative, the College supports the launch of K-12 charter schools. These schools follow a classical liberal arts model and have a strong civics component that will equip students to understand and defend the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
“I am delighted at the opportunity. During my time as a college professor, I have seen how important childhood education really is. In their formative years, students need a rigorous education, academically challenging and rich in content,” said Arnn. “They also need an education in character, so that they develop the habits of heart and mind that will serve them for their entire lives. The classical education at Founders is a two-fold education, in serious content and in virtue, so that students are equipped not only for success, but for happiness.”
Founders Classical Academy provides time-tested methods of educating students and delivers the most cutting-edge classical education in America. The entire curriculum at Founders is based in Classical Liberal Arts and Sciences with a strong emphasis on civic education. By studying the past and analyzing the present, students will be ready to contribute to the future.
Arnn began her career at the Claremont Review of Books, where she served as the Assistant Editor. She has taught courses on United States Government, Undergraduate Seminars in Political Theory, and Introduction to Political Theory at Morehead State University. Most recently, she wrote and defended her dissertation: Happiness and the Political Life: Aristotle on Magnanimity, Justice, and Prudence.
Open enrollment for Founders Classical Academy will begin December 2 and run through January 17, 2014. If we have more applications than spaces available, a lottery will be held to determine acceptance.
